Are you sure that you checked the box?

I.e., in addition to entering your formula, did you remember to check the box that says "Hide paragraph if formula is true"?

BTW: I also tried this with Domino 8.5.3. I set up the About document three lines. The first is text, with no hide-when. The second line is computed text "Hide me!" and a button with an @Prompt, and a hide-when set to @True. The third line is text. It displays only the two text lines, as expected. When I changed the hide-when to false; all three lines are displayed.
